On June 10, 1940, the Gestapo took control of Terezìn (Theresienstadt), a fortress, built in 1780-1790 in what is now the Czech Republic, and set up prison in the Small Fortress (Kleine Festung). 20th century German-Polish-Jewish Rabbi, scholar, and a leader of Progressive Judaism. On 27 Jan. 1943, he was deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp. He became the "honorary head" of the Council of Elders (Judenrat) in Theresienstadt.
